Can You Flush Tofu Cat Litter in NZ?
Do not assume tofu cat litter can go down the toilet. A “flushable” or water-soluble claim on a product is not permission from your local wastewater operator. For an Auckland home, Watercare instructs customers to flush only toilet paper and human waste. Used cat litter does not fit that instruction.
What to do before disposing of litter
- Read the current instructions on the exact bag or bucket.
- Check your local wastewater operator’s guidance; outside Auckland, use the operator serving your address.
- Keep litter out of the toilet if either source prohibits it or permission is unclear.
- Follow local household-waste instructions for bagging and disposing of used litter. Do not assume that compostable packaging makes used litter suitable for a food-scraps bin.
Why the product name is not enough
Tofu, cassava and blended litters can have different ingredients and instructions. Do not infer disposal suitability from the word “natural”, from a video of pellets dissolving, or from a different product in the same brand.

Does biodegradable mean flushable?
No. Do not use an environmental claim as a substitute for wastewater guidance.
Can I flush a small clump with extra water?
Extra water does not override the operator’s instructions. Keep litter out of the toilet when those instructions exclude it.
